Ideas to optimize space

There are many ways to save space and optimize it, but also to give a feeling of spaciousness and avoid claustrophobic environments in apartments and small houses. Sometimes we make the mistake of overloading the rooms trying to take advantage of every corner, which can be somewhat suffocating. For functionality and aesthetics to go hand in hand, we opt for a ‘magical’ decoration that manages to appear and disappear depending on the needs.

No partition walls

Doing away with partitions – except for those strictly necessary – creates a single, open space that gives a feeling of spaciousness. In these cases, the division of spaces can be done with glass partitions, shelves, panels, screens, special curtains, etc. Sliding doors also help to optimize space.

Spaces and furniture with multiple personalities

Increasingly, furniture is being designed for multiple uses, with a view to optimizing small spaces. In this way, the space destined for the living room can accommodate an area for guests, for example.

There are numerous pieces of furniture with different uses depending on the destination of the room at any given moment: original and comfortable two-seater sofas that transform into beds -such as the Carlota model; folding beds that can be used as a table or sideboard, ideal for visitors; or original and comfortable armchairs that fold up to lie down in a relaxed way -such as the Arena and Flavia models.

Modular and small-sized furniture

The variety of modular bedrooms is wide: with bunk beds or ‘hidden’ beds, areas that transform into an office with a desk or a multitude of drawers and shelves for storage. Catalogs also often include kitchens that optimize space with compartments in the most unexpected places.

It is necessary to choose well, however, as some of them turn into impossible puzzles that are not very comfortable due to their layout or that generate a feeling of suffocation. It’s about making the home inviting, not a mousetrap.

The American bars with the possibility of incorporating stools under their surface, or the tables adapted to store chairs or puff under their space – such as the Quatro table – are very functional when it comes to saving space.

Because of the small space they occupy, their comfort and functionality, poufs, whether in their cylindrical or cubic shapes -some serve as a seat or table depending on the needs- are ideal to give a feeling of spaciousness. Its light weight also allows it to be easily moved to different areas or recesses without giving the impression of a small space.

Beds with storage couches – some of which have built-in shelves on their sides – or trunks that can be used as a table or a comfortable seat – in the puff chest style – also make it possible to make the most of space.

Colors that give a feeling of spaciousness

Light, cool colors give a feeling of spaciousness. White is ideal for small spaces because it multiplies, in addition, the luminosity, which also accentuates the perception of spaciousness.

The staircase and its openings

The stairwell can accommodate multiple storage spaces – also a small storage room or a bathroom. There is the possibility of installing wooden stairs that incorporate drawers on the sides or even in the steps themselves, as well as shelves or bookcases, thus multiplying the possibilities of the space.

Mezzanines as a ‘false’ second floor

When the height of the house allows it, a loft can be created to house a bedroom or office -if there is enough space- or for storage. It is easy to fall into the claustrophobia of which we have already spoken in drawing this false plant that it is preferable not to overload with furniture.

Built-in cabinets and bookcases

The bookcases and shelves built into the wall (if they are arranged at half height, they allow to place tables, sofas or the bed underneath, for example) are very functional to take advantage of the space. In the case of libraries it is necessary to design them conscientiously because they do not allow changes without work.
