We dedicate this post to one of our favorite pieces of furniture: the divan . This piece owes its name to the rooms where it used to be placed in the congress chambers of the Middle East, called divan or diwan (which means something like government council). Romantic literature made them fashionable between 1820 and 1850, when they became widespread in boudoirs and cafés. Freud would internationalize it as the seat par excellence of psychoanalysis.
The relationship of the couch with the liberation of the subconscious and reflection has always attracted our attention. We do not know if it is because of the influence of cinema, literature or the father of psychoanalysis himself – as we have already mentioned in a previous post – we usually associate couches with the search for the self and, in short, with introspection.
Perhaps because of what Wilde said about nature imitating art, referring to that which exists, but which we do not notice until literature or painting portrays it in a certain way. As an example, he says that London’s mists may have always been there, but no one noticed them and associated them with the city until painters, writers and filmmakers emphasized this feature. If we reflect on this statement, we are as influenced by the worldview reflected in literature, movies and other arts as Madame Bovary was conditioned by the romantic novels she read. In fact, in our daily reality we tend to imitate art without even realizing it.
With this digression we simply intended to warn that, in view of this influence, it is not strange to imagine ourselves almost instinctively lying on a couch delving into our psyche and other existential questions. Hence, this piece of furniture is linked to spaces designed for relaxation and comfort, such as a reading corner, living room or bedroom.
For the same reasons, couches are often used in chill out & lounge decor, as both styles seek to convey calm, peace and comfort. Many chill out terraces choose to include couches so that customers can lie down comfortably. Also in the decoration for events, such as chill out weddings, it has become a very demanded piece, since it adds a touch of glamour to the space that multiplies its elegance and distinction.
There are couches in as many styles as there are tastes. From the most romantic, to the retro and even futuristic. In Fiaka we have opted for a design model specially designed for lounge and chill out decoration: the Sigmund divan, which we have already told you about on occasion and that can be customized to adapt it to the interior design of your dreams.
We leave you some images that can inspire you to decorate your home and premises with this psychoanalytical piece of furniture.
